The Yorkshire Terrier originates from the UK town of Yorkshire where they get their namesake. In 1885, the American Kennel Club (AKC) recognized these small but expressive pups as part of the toy group. Yorkshire Terriers were first bred as “ratters” or dogs that could shimmy into small spaces to control rat populations. While they are now the most popular dog in the U.S. for being a wonderful companion, they haven’t lost their sense of adventure or determination.

This dog breed’s behavior is often described as loving and affectionate or stubborn and mischievous. It is best to begin training and socializing early to avoid any possible behavioral issues or bad habits. Terriers are somewhat easy to train and have an average intelligence of a canine. They do, however, need to be given frequent potty breaks while being trained. It may also be a good idea to get potty pads while your puppy is still learning. Be sure to also curb their barking when possible. Though they are small, their bark can be heard all over the neighborhood if you let them.

As with any pooch, you should research the Yorkshire Terrier breed before adopting a puppy. This can be done online or by speaking to one of our breeders. You should also research the best training methods for the breed as well as possible dietary issues. If you wish to adopt a Yorkshire Terrier, be sure to do so from a reliable breeder or shelter.
